Financial Tips
Whether short term or long term, many people eventually find themselves in a financial bind. Sometimes it’s bad planning, lack of financial teaching or just unexpected causes. The following is a compilation of some tips to help you pull out of a bad financial situation and help keep you from finding yourself in the same situation again.
Know Your Money
This includes anything coming in and going out. If your check varies, figure up an average over the course of multiple weeks. Once you know how much comes in on average, the next thing to do is find out just how much goes out (spending) and to where. On a sheet of paper list your must have bills. This would likely include things like; rent, electricity, food, phone and transportation. Must have bills are things that the average person cannot easily cut out of their finances. The necessary costs should be less then the incoming funds. If that is not the case then supplementing may be needed. Once the needed bills have been figured out, take a look at what other areas your money is going to. This may often be things like eating out or general shopping. These things may be easily cut out with a little bit of discipline.
Cut Back
Once you have looked closely at every dollar that is spent you may find a large amount is spent on extras. Extras are things that may be enjoyable but are not needed for survival. Enjoyment can be good but sometimes when finances are bad it becomes necessary to make sacrifices in order to raise the over all quality of life. Be honest when you consider those things that are necessary, sometimes people convince themselves that they need things that are really extras.
While eating out may be enjoyable it is rarely ever necessary. Find simple meals to prepare at home and turn eating out into an occasional treat. This saves you money and causes you to appreciate the experience even more.
Electronics is often a big area available for cuts. A phone is often necessary for jobs, but you may be able to cut back on either amount of phones (just have a cell phone and stop the land line) or the usage. Find the cheapest possible plan or get a prepaid plan that will keep you from getting extra fees. If your income is low enough you may be eligible for free home phone service.
While internet can be very helpful in job search and more, many really can get by without having internet in their homes. Many public libraries offer internet and if you have wireless internet capability there are many businesses that offer free internet if you have the computer.
Sell things you don’t need or use anymore. If it hasn’t been used in the last year it is often safe to sell it because you probably don’t really need it. Yard sales, consignment shops and internet sites can be places to declutter your life and make a little extra money.
More Money
While earning more is often easier said then done, many can find things to bring in a little more money to help the finances. Look for part time things you can do to bring in a little more money. If you know how to do something well you may be able to find someone who needs your services, such as lawn care, babysitting, or sewing. Or you may be able to teach others, teach them a trade or tutor a child.
You can also have more money at the end of the month by finding the things you need for a cheaper price. Use coupons, watch for sales and shop stores that are known for being cheaper. Some store brand items taste the same or work just as well as name brand items that cost much more. Visit a thrift shop when you need to buy an item, often what you need can be found for much less but still in fine condition.
However, whenever you manage to have a little extra money do not go spend it on unneeded things. Save any extra aside and do not spend it unless you find yourself too low on money one week and need that extra to buy sandwiches for your family.
Avoid Debt
Debt is any money that you owe to someone else. As much as possible it is best to avoid owning anything in a long term situation. Anything like credit cards or rent-to-own usually causes you to pay 3 or 4 times as much as normally. This is where saving the little extra aside can be very helpful. It is best to save extra and buy something outright then to use a credit card or something like it. If possible make use of “buy now, pay later” plans, except don’t wait till later to start paying. Pay the debt off in full before the interest kicks in.
If you find yourself owing or getting behind on bills, don’t ignore them and hope they go away. Contact the company that you owe. Ask them if there is a way to lower the amount you owe, some will work with you to help find breaks to give you if they know you are not just trying to get away without paying. Also if you cannot make the regular payments, pay something, even if it’s a small amount, they will likely see that you are at least trying and not cause as much problems for you.
If you find yourself in a financial bind first figure out exactly how much you have coming in and going out and how it is spent. Then make sacrifices in order to help yourself out in the long run. Make a budget, decide exactly how much you are going to spend on different things and stick to it. Find ways to bring in a little extra income here and there. Find ways to spend less on things you cannot cut out. Following these tips may not make all your troubles go away but can help greatly in your financial future.
